The Long War
DEA Special Agent Joe 'Mack' Mackinson is on a mission one night, in the desert outside San Diego. He's alone, wishing he were home with his beautiful wife Carly. It's spooky along the river, and Mack keeps his gun close as he munches on a tunafish salad sandwich Carly lovingly made for him. Hearing noises in the roiling fog, he steps out to investigate—and confronts a UFO.
But this isn't a craft from distant space. It's from a great city in the distant future, at the edge of time, which is being torn apart after a terrible time war. Time Town (one of the city's many names) sends agents back in time to make little tweaks that will buy it more survival time uptime.
Now it's Mack's turn to serve. After Mack is kidnapped, the Third Postal Lord of Time Town sends him to serve in a grim, Orwellian Amerika of 2084, ruled by lies, paranoia, and the Great Shepherd. Mack learns someone brutally murdered Carly the night of the stakeout, back in 2009. Can he serve Time Town, elude the police of Long War Amerika, and save his wife despite strict orders not to, because such changes can lead to a fatal Contradiction?
