About
In 1996, This Shoal of Space, then titled Heartbreaker, made history by being one of the world's two first novels ever published in their entirety online, by being released in weekly serial chapters over more than a year. The other was Neon Blue. Starting in Fall 1996, I began releasing both novels simultaneously in weekly serial chapters. Neon Blue ran on a website called neonbluefiction.com (my suspense fiction), while Heartbreaker ran on a website called thehauntedvillage.com (my sf/f/h work). Working with Brian Callahan, I released each chapter on a successive Sunday evenings. Few people had Internet-connected home computers at the time, and I counted on most of them doing clandestine surfing at work while having their Monday morning coffee. It turned out to be a correct bet. We reached an audience of avid readers on all continents of the world, who sometimes wrote to express their gratitude. Readers included some scattered from New Zealand to South Africa, from Canada to Germany, from Russia to Red China, and all across the United States. This points up the interesting fact that much of the early proliferation of the World Wide Web was by people surfing clandestinely while at work.
