44. San Francisco 1945 NKVD men and women forcibly brought Anna Stokowska to a ship in San Francisco harbor on that cold damp night in the fall of 1945. No U.S. authorities knew or intervened. It was two minutes to midnight by an industrial clock hanging on a union house wall. Weak lights glowed greenish under hat-shaped enamel shades on telephone poles. These small islands of light hovered, hemmed in and overwhelmed, beneath the rust-streaked hulls of freighters. The abductors led their prisoner by the elbows—they had given her a needle with morphine in the car, and she was beyond fighting them. It was a silent, irresistible way to go. She had only a small suitcase, the baby in her womb, and the clothes on her back as they led her over the swaying wooden dock. Looming above was a black metal hull bearing a red star and the Cyrillic legend Kalinin. The group came to a rectangular opening into the ship’s hold, which smelled of pallet wood, heavy hempen rope, diesel oil, packing grease, rotting fish, and cooked cabbage. As they stepped inside, a wall of fog drifted over the docks. City streets in the hills, blocks away, offered stray cheers to celebrate the end of the war or a win at a ballgame, and horns tooted as if saying goodbye. The hands on the clock on the union house wall passed across midnight, from the old day to the new. Minutes later, as the fog thinned, the steel cargo gate had been shut. Condensation dripped down the riveted and brutal hull. Not a soul could be seen. The docks were empty, as by a magician’s trick. The fog brought a low booming of ships’ whistles, whispering over the curvature of the earth far out at sea. |
