Within a week, the giant rocket thundered aloft. Generals, admirals, and news reporters from all segments of East and West Gotha society stood at the drizzly, gray launch pad. As the rocket shook the ground and lit up the early morning sky, a cheer went up. As the rocket's glowing tail grew distant, the first rays of dawn lit the night sky.
The rocket achieved escape velocity and pushed on, faster and faster, breaking out of orbital velocity, and climbing (or falling) toward the sun when its engines burned out. The fourteen science packages Queen Amy I had managed to assemble spread out silently from the central pod that had once been meant to guide nearly two dozen deadly warheads to a now no longer existing enemy capital.
Instead, the pod now continued on into a solar orbit, where it would stay for a billion years. Turning gracefully as it approached solar orbit, it exposed the rugged collector cells to a constant bath of limitless solar power. If Tedda's hypothesis were wrong, nothing would happen to the single data chip installed in the exact center of the pod's innermost compartment.
