Alex could have sworn he heard the tiny shadow on his left shoulder say “Geedins!”
Alex jerked up, blinded by a pounding headache, and spun around on the ground to protect himself from whatever incubus was infesting this nightmare of his. Only it wasn’t a nightmare. Maryan was dead and gone, so suddenly, so totally…
Alex lay in a sheltered place not far from a calmly flickering fire. Overcome with grief, rage, and fear, he gasped for breath and struggled like someone drowning in a dream. Hands gently but firmly pressed him back down on a bed of fur and leaves.
He saw, over and over again, the black vision of his beloved woman shot in front of his eyes and tumbling to her death in the water below. He couldn’t even cry out, but stuck the fingertips of both hands into his wide open, tortured mouth. He felt his eyes widen in horror as he saw her again die before his eyes, again and again. He saw again Nizin’s fierce, merciless eyes glittering from the forest.
As nightmare gave way to day and wakefulness, he saw the faces of small people hovering over him in the brownish darkness, looking vaguely like a cross between Nizin and Xumar. They moved away with as much apparent shock as Alex felt.
The fiery pounding pain in Alex’s head overwhelmed him, and he fell backward into darkness.
